John Law is an immensely tactful pianist, who impresses not with brash displays of virtuosity, but through unerring exercise of refined judgement. His taste is for Thelonious Monk and mediaeval European music, and elements drawn from both sit comfortably within his spacious musical conception. Yet his own voice remains refreshingly distinctive. In drummer Paul Clarvis and American bassist Tim Wells, he has found equally discreet collaborators, and together they conjure a deceptive evenness on the surface of their artfully balanced, yet structurally complex improvisations.
